Trusteeship, Not Charity.

We both trained in medicine. One of us stayed in clinical practice; the other spent a career financing the institutions that deliver it. Both paths taught the same lesson — that good intentions are abundant in this sector and good outcomes are not, and that the distance between them is almost always a matter of rigour.

So, we set up Vimaakr on what we call Rational Benevolence. Compassion decides what we care about; evidence decides what we fund. That means depth before breadth: a few commitments we can measure rather than many we cannot, and failures reported plainly rather than left to repeat quietly.

We hold this wealth as a trust rather than a possession: that duty is also a debt to the teachers who gave us knowledge, and to the family and country that made the work possible at all.

Founders and Trustees

Dr. Amit Varma, Co-founder and Trustee

Dr. Amit spent the first part of his working life in intensive care units, in Delhi, New York, and Pittsburgh. The second part he spent building hospitals, and the companies that supply them, across Asia; along the way he co-founded Quadria Capital, a healthcare investment firm. He has never quite stopped being a doctor, and it shows in how he gives.

Some of his work has always sat outside business. He founded, and still mentors, 1 of Asia's largest TeleICU networks: more than 500 intensive care beds across India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, bringing specialist critical care to hospitals that could not otherwise offer it. He is a Founder and Trustee of Ashoka University, Senior Advisor to the Shantilal Shanghvi Foundation, and Principal Trustee of the Stranctuary Foundation. He serves on the advisory boards of Orbis International and the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology, and teaches at NUS Business School. He trained at the University of Delhi, the State University of New York, and the University of Pittsburgh, and held academic posts at Pittsburgh and the Cleveland Clinic.

At Vimaakr, he brings a doctor's insistence on whether people get better, and an investor's patience to wait for it.
